A smaller kingdom, Edo, is ruled by an older and mostly forgotten monarchy under the Subarashi family. Having originally taken the crown by force, the family has always worked closely with the yakuza behind closed doors. This is still an ongoing deal that's only known to those a part of it: high up leaders of the yakuza clan and the king and queen themselves, but those close enough are able to get a whiff of the mangled power battle.Once King Shirou and Queen Kyouko were crowned, neither cared much for having children and quickly had Hibi after out of mere necessity. After years of trying and failing to balance his work, family, and personal life, Shirou came to the conclusion that his family would run away from their titles instead of continuing to live in stress and mental decay. In the never-ending battle between pleasing the people, while obeying the yakuza under the table, and their child now sixteen, he believed there was better elsewhere. Frankly, it was the easiest and quickest option to get out of the overbearing responsibility he no longer wished to manage. But first, they had to come clean with Hibi about their family's debt.

Filled with ignorant bliss, Hibiya stayed behind to hold the title of prince when his parents departed. He knew full well he was able to do everything his father couldn’t, and better, and that it was just a matter of time before they stopped their dramatics and continued to honoured their duty to the crown.Unfortunately, Hibiya had not yet been fully trained to rule when he stepped into the position. Most everything he had to figure out on his own while covering up the continued departure of the technically still ruling King and Queen. People were impatient with him and questioned his legitimacy as work needed to continue as planned. A quick and ruthless temper tried to protect him from this new world, but as there were no longer rules that stopped him acting on impulsive and nearsighted decisions, it instead led to losing himself to unhealthy coping mechanisms, as well as losing his fiancee's hand to another.After reaching his lowest point and gradually finding his new normal of accepting his new routine of working, hosting dinners, going to parties, making deals, betraying allies... there is an always lingering fear of something else unknown to him in his kingdom still happening that he simply won’t know how to take care of when it shows its ugly face.

Hibiko has long accepted that the plan was always for her to marry into another family to better her parents and Edo. Unable to strip their well brain-washed daughter of the only goal she has of supporting a king and family of her own and admit the failure they’ve set her up for, her parents backpedaled their plans of escape. There was instead a promise that has weighed heavy on her heart since: to marry whomever and whenever they deem suitable. It was easy for the princess to agree as she was already engaged. However, the sudden pressure for the teenagers to marry before planned didn't go as they hoped.While she’s been set up to assume her marriage will help alleviate pressure off their shoulders, lessen their workload, and allow for her parents to live for themselves again, it is actually their excuse to finally leave once she’s safe in another home, and their debt be inherited by a wealthier family.While she still has the goal of marriage to support her parents, now older, smarter, and more hungry, knows there is obviously more for her. When outside the setting of other royals and needing to impress, she is rather witty and dramatic, book-smart, but very ignorant.
